[논문 초록]
우리나라의 경제발전과 한류 열풍으로 국내 거주 외국인의 수가 급속도로 증가하였다. 한국으로 유학 오는 외국인 학생도 2013년 8.2만 명으로 증가하였다. 그러나 외국인 유학생들은 유학생활을 위해 한국어를 배웠음에도 불구하고 언어에 대한 어려움으로 인해 일상생활을 영위하는데 어려움을 겪고 있다. 국내 인터넷 이용률이 증가하면서 한국에서는 인터넷을 통한 정보접근 및 습득이 보편적인 생활로 자리 잡고 있다. 그러나 많은 외국인들이 문화적 차이와 언어소통의 문제로 어려움을 겪고 있으며, 인터넷 접근과 활용에서 내국인과 비교해 볼 때 정보격차가 큰 것으로 나타나고 있다.
본 연구는 한국어 실력의 부족으로 인해 한국문화에 대한 적응에 어려움을 겪는 외국인을 위한 다국어지원 서비스에 주목하고자 한다. 다국어 지원 서비스는 한국어 능력의 부족함으로 오는 정보접근의 어려움을 해소하는 취지로 시작되었으나, 이러한 서비스가 언제, 어디서, 어떤 방식으로 이용되고 있는지, 이용 실태는 어떠한지, 서비스가 어떻게 인식되고 있는지에 대한 학문적 접근은 시도되지 않고 있다.
본 연구는 다른 외국인에 비해 비교적 컴퓨터, 인터넷 등 정보화 기기활용이 활발한 국내 거주 외국인 유학생을 대상으로 한국어 능력이 인터넷 정보활용 및 정보습득경로에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 살펴보고자 하였다. 또한 이들의 다국어지원 서비스의 이용 동기가 무엇이며, 다국어지원 서비스 이용에 따른 불만족 요인을 파악하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 수도권 주요대학에 재학 중인 외국인 유학생 193명을 대상으로 설문조사를 통해 살펴보았고, 다음과 같은 연구문제를 설정하였다.
연구문제 1. 외국인 유학생의 한국어능력의 차이에 따라 인터넷활용능력은 어떠한 차이가 있는가?
연구문제 2 : 외국인 유학생의 한국어능력의 차이에 따라 이용하는 정보습득경로는 어떤 차이가 있는가?
연구문제 3. 외국인 유학생의 인터넷이용정도, 인터넷활용능력, 한국어능력이 다국어지원 서비스의 이용에 미치는 영향은 어떠한가?
연구문제 4. 외국인 유학생의 다국어지원 서비스의 지각된 이용 동기는 무엇인가?
연구문제 5. 외국인 유학생의 다국어지원 서비스 이용 동기가 서비스 불만족에 미치는 영향은 어떠한가?
분석결과 첫째, 외국인 유학생의 한국어능력과 인터넷활용능력의 상관관계는 높았으나, 외국인 유학생의 한국어능력의 차이에 따라 인터넷활용능력이 차이가 나타나는 지에 대해서는 통계적으로 유의미한 차이는 발견되지 않았다.
둘째, 외국인 유학생의 정보습득경로를 살펴보았다. 학업정보의 경우 유학생이 가장 많이 이용하는 경로는 인터넷, 앱, 모국인 지인인 것으로 나타났다. 일상정보 경우 역시 인터넷을 통해 가장 많이 이용하고 있으며 한국인 지인, 모국인 지인 순으로 일상정보를 많이 습득하고 있는 것으로 나타났다.
셋째, 유학생의 인터넷 사용시간, 한국어능력, 인터넷활용능력 중 인터넷 사용시간과 인터넷활용능력만이 다국어지원 서비스 이용에 통계적으로 유의미한 수준으로 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다.
넷째, 외국인 유학생의 다국어지원 서비스의 이용 동기에 대한 문항들에 대한 요인 분석 결과, 다국어지원 서비스 이용 동기는 긴장완화, 생활정보 추구, 대학생활정보 추구, 커뮤니케이션 추구 네 가지 요인으로 추출되었다.
다섯째, 다국어지원 서비스의 이용 동기에 따라 다국어지원 서비스에 대한 불만족에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 서비스 이용 동기가 클 경우 서비스접근이 쉽지 않다는 점에 가장 큰 불만을 가지고 있었다. 그러나 긴장 완화 동기가 큰 경우에는 콘텐츠에 대한 불만과 서비스에 대한 불만이 매우 크게 나타났다. 생활정보 추구 동기의 경우 서비스에 대한 불만이 크게 나타났으며, 커뮤니케이션 동기를 가진 유학생들 역시 서비스 불만을 느끼고 있었다.
외국인 유학생의 경우 인터넷의존도가 높은 것을 가만하면 한국어능력이 좋을수록 학업정보 활용능력이 통계적으로 유의미한 차이를 보여 학교생활적응에 한국어능력은 중요하다. 또한 한국어능력이 낮은 외국인 유학생의 경우 대면활동이 적어 학교 내 외국인지원센터를 덜 이용하고 있어 이들 유학생과 소통이 가능하게 모국어 지원이 필요하다. 외국인 유학생의 다국어지원서비스 이용 동기는 다양하게 나타나고 있어 정보추구뿐만 아니라 커뮤니케이션과 긴장완화를 위한 다국어지원 서비스 제공도 필요하다. 다국어지원 서비스의 가강 큰 불만은 서비스접근으로 다양한 언어로 제공하여 서비스접근이 용이하게 할 필요가 있다.
본 연구는 이용과 충족이론을 기반으로 다국어지원 서비스 이용 동기를 추출하였으며, 추출된 이용 동기에 따른 불만족을 살펴보았다. 연구결과를 바탕으로 다음과 같이 제언하고자 한다.
첫째, 정부당국은 외국인 유학생이 관련된 웹사이트에서 다양한 국가의 언어를 제공하여 한국생활정보 및 학업정보를 제공할 필요가 있다.
둘째, 학교당국은 한국어 능력이 부족한 학생을 위하여 모국어를 통해 정보를 습득할 수 있는 유학생 지원센터
The number of foreign residents in Korea has rapidly increased by economic development and the Korean wave. International students to study in Korea have gone up to 82,000 in 2013. However, international students are having a hard time getting used to Korean life because of the difficulty of the language even though they studied Korean in advance. In South Korea, searching information and learning over the Internet is becoming a common life as the Internet usage increased. But many foreigners are struggling with cultural differences and language barrier, and comparing international students with Korean concerning the access to internet and the usage of internet, digital divide is massive.
The purpose of this study is to focus on multilingual support services for foreigners struggling to adapt to Korea culture due to the lack of Korean language ability. Multilingual support services have started to eliminate difficulties of get the information due to the lack of Korean language proficiency. But academic approaches has not been attempted, like when and where these services are being use, how to use these services, how they think the service.
In this study, I want to examine how Korean language ability affects the Internet use and the method of getting information, based on the students who are relatively good at computer, internet and devices. Also I try to find out what the motives of their multilingual support services are and what the major factor of dissatisfaction about multi-lingual support services is.We set the subjects of research over a survey of 193 international students attending the major metropolitan universities as bellows.
Research Question 1.How does the difference of Korean ability affect the internet usage of foreign students?
Research Question 2.How does the difference of Korean ability affect the method of getting information?
Research Question 3.How do the frequency of internet use, the ability of internet use and the Korean ability affect the multilingual services?
Research Question 4. What are the motives of multilingual service of foreign students?
Research Question 5.What kind of dissatisfaction factors result from the type of those motives?
By the results of analysis, the correlation between the Korean ability and Internet use ability of foreign students is significantly higher, statistically significant differences have not been found.
Secondly, looking at the foreign student’s methods of getting information, most frequent methods are internet, Apps, acquaintances of homeland in case of academic information. And in case of the daily information, they are internet, Korean friends, the acquaintances of homeland.
Third, among the time of internet use, the ability of internet use, Korean ability, the first and the second factor influence statistically significant on multilingual services.
Fourth, the results off actor analysis for the motives of multilingual services, 4 major motivations are relaxation, the daily information, academic information, communication.
Finally, I examined the effect on the dissatisfaction factors in accordance with the motives of multilingual services. When they want to use the multilingual services, difficulties of access to the internet was the biggest factor. In case of the motive of relaxation, dissatisfaction for the contents and services was the biggest. When they want to search for the daily information and the communication, they were unsatisfied mostly with services,
In the case of foreign students, they are highly dependent on the Internet. The better they have korean ability, the better they use academic Information. Therefore korean ability is very important to get used to their school life.
Also, foreign students who are not fluent in Korean are not relatively social and seldom go to the support center because of difficulties of communication with employees of the center. So interpreters for foreign students are necessary in the support center. We also need to provide the various multilingual services not only for information but also communication and relaxation, for there are various motives for the multilingual services.
The biggest problem for those services is the difficulty in access, so we need to provide multilingual access for the foreign student.
I analyzed the motives of multilingual support services based on the uses and gratifications theory, and examined the dissatisfaction factors according to the type of motives. Based on the results from the study, I suggest as follows.
First, the government needs to provide daily and academic information in Korea on the website which is relevant to foreign students with various languages.
Second, the institutes have to hire employees with various languages in the foreign support center.
Third, the multilingual internet broadcasting needs to be activated for getting academic information and getting used to Korean life through internet.
The purpose of this study is to help the international students settle earlier in Korea and to help them understand exact information and Korean culture through the multilingual support service.
I hope this study can be a foundation for being more integrated society by continuous studying of multilingual support service, not to exist people who are isolated on account of language barriers.
