정부 주도의 ‘Study Korea Project’, 대중문화가 선도한 ‘한류열풍’, 그리고 한국사회의 ‘학령인구감소’ 등이 복합적으로 작용한 결과 때문에 2000년대 이후 국내 대학의 외국인 유학생은 지속적 증가를 이어가고 있다. 이러한 추세에 따라 국내 대학들은 유학생의 학습효과 증진과 교육 만족도 제고를 위해 어느 정도 충분한 준비가되어 있는지에 대한 점검과 대응이 필요한 시점이다. 그러나 아쉽게도 외국인 유학생증가에 따른 국내 대학들의 유학생 대상 교육과정 편성의 수월성, 만족도 및 효과성검증을 바탕으로 한 교육과정의 개선 효과, 그리고 학습성과 향상을 위한 유학생 맞춤형 교육과정 개발 등의 성과는 여전히 미흡한 것이 현실이다.
본 연구는 이러한 당면 과제의 선행 조치로서 유학생 대상 ‘신입생 세미나’ 교육의필요성을 제안하며, 이에 대한 교육과정의 모델을 제안함에 목적을 두었다. 유학생의관점에서 보건대, 유학 생활의 성패를 가르는 1차 관문이 국내 대학에서의 첫 학기를어떻게 보내느냐에 달려있다고 보아도 과언은 아니다. 낯선 환경과 문화에 고스란히노출되고 여전히 익숙지 않은 언어로 인한 소통의 난맥상에 놓여 있는 유학생에게 제공할 신입생 세미나 교과(프로그램)는 유학생들에게 심리적 안정은 물론이고, 대학생활 적응과 학업 적응의 만족도 향상을 기대할 수 있을 것이다. 또한, 개별 대학의 입장에서도 이러한 교과목(프로그램)의 개발 및 운영을 통해 유학생의 조기 정착을 유도함으로써 중도 탈락을 낮출 수 있고, 아울러 안정적인 유학생 관리에도 효과성을 기대할 수 있을 것으로 판단한다.
이를 위해 본 연구는 최근의 국내 대학 유학생 증가 추이를 실증적으로 확인하였고, 유학생 증가에 따른 유학생 대상 대학생활 적응 프로그램의 개발 필요성을 살펴보았다. 그리고 대학생활의 성패를 좌우할 첫 학기에 유학생에게 제공할 대학생활 적응, 대학자원 활용, 보고서 작성법 등으로 구성한 신입생 세미나 교과 프로그램 모델을 제안하였다.
Since the beginning of the 21st century, the number of international students has increased due to several reasons: the government-led ‘Study Korea Project,’ the internationalization of Korean popular culture, and the decrease of the school-age population in Korean society. With this trend, it is time for universities to check how much they have sufficiently prepared to enhance the learning effects and educational satisfaction of international students. Unfortunately, the results of improving the curriculum for international students based on the verification of excellence, satisfaction, and effectiveness are not only unsatisfactory, but additionally, the tailored-curriculum for international students to improve learning outcomes is insufficient.
This study suggests the necessity of a ‘first-year seminar’ for international students as a precedent for this immediate task and thus, proposes a curriculum model.
From an international student's point of view, the springboard that determines the success or failure of studying abroad is how they spend their first semester. Since international students are unfamiliar with environments, cultures, and languages, the first-year seminar will provide them psychological stability and improve the satisfaction of their college life. In addition, from the standpoint of individual universities, through the development and operation of this program, dropout rates can be lowered by inducing early settlement of international students, and each university can manage them effectively.
Accordingly, this study proves the recent trend of increasing rate in international students and examines the necessity of developing a college adaptation program for them. Furthermore, a first-year seminar curriculum model is proposed, consisting of adaptation to college life, utilization of college resources, and report writing methods, which will determine the success or failure of college life.
