[논문 초록]

본 연구는 미국 유학생 잡지 『우라키』에 게재된 서양인의 제언을 분석하여 미국 유학생의 내면화된 오리엔탈리즘을 규명하고자 했다. 그리고 이에 기초하여,『우라키』소재 소설의 특징을 밝히고자 했다.
『우라키』에 제국의 제언으로 규정할 만한 논설은 총 7편이었다. 이 논설의 내용은 크게 두 가지로 정리할 수 있었다. 첫째는 ‘조선의 정체성’과 관련된 것이었다. 제국은 문명으로서의 자신의 정체성을 드러내기 위해, 야만으로 규정될 수 있는 타자를 필요로 했다. 조선에게 요구된 정체성은 곧 그들을 위한 타자로서의 정체성이었다. 둘째, 발전의 논리와 관련된 것이었다. 조선의 발전을 주장하는 논의의 대부분은 일본 제국주의에 대한 옹호를 함축하고 있었다. 즉, 일본의 식민 정책에 의해 조선이 발전되었다는 것이다. 그러나 그 발전으로 인해 누릴 수 있는 혜택에서 조선은 소외되어 있었다. 따라서 『우라키』에 게재된 제국의 제언은 대부분 제국 스스로를 위한 것일뿐, 식민지 조선을 위한 것은 아니었다.
제국의 제언 속에 내포되어 있는 오리엔탈리즘은 『우라키』소재 소설에서도 드러났다. 장성욱의 모르는 나라로! 와 구름의 밧가운데집 은 각각 “부녀간의 사랑”과 “결혼한 여성의 불륜”이라는 파격적인 사랑을 형상화했다. 그러나 이들 사랑을 대하는 문명과 야만의 태도는 달랐다. 즉, “부녀간의 사랑”을 배제하는 문명과 “결혼한 여성의 불륜”을 허용하는 조선을 대비시킴으로써, 이 소설들은 조선에 대한 내면화된 오리엔탈리즘을 서사화했다.
미국 유학생들이 편찬한 우라키라는 잡지는 그 중요성에도 불구하고 많이 다루어지지 않았다. 따라서 본고는 그동안 간과되었던『우라키』를 오리엔탈리즘적 관점에서 고찰했다는 의의를 가진다.

This paper did a research on the internalized orientalism of Koreans studying in the United States. Therefore this paper investigated the suggestions of the West in the Uraki(The Rocky) . Based on this, this paper described the characteristics of the fictions in the Uraki(The Rocky).
The suggestions of the West in the Uraki(The Rocky) were all seven. There are two characteristics of these proposals. The first was related to “the identify of Korea”. The Second was related to the logic of development. However their suggestions were not for colonial Korea but for empire.
The orientalism implied in the suggestions of empire also appeared in the fictions in the Uraki(The Rocky) . Some works have portrayed taboo love. But the love forbidden by civilization was possible in Korea. Through this way, Korea was defined as undeveloped.
The Uraki(The Rocky) written by Koreans studying in the United States was not discussed much. Therefore, this study has the significance of discussing Uraki(The Rocky) in terms of orientalism.
