his research focuses on Chinese students` social networks at a National University located in the southern part of South Korea. I focus on examining the formation of social capital in terms of reciprocity, exchanged emotions, language resources, and materials (gifts) in the context of cultural diversity. Within the frame of stratified transnational higher education, the students recognize their social positions, based on their choice of a local university in South Korea, which in turn influences their strategies of making social relationships. Their goals lie in expanding the choices of job market and future family life in China, rather than “global citizenship” and “cosmopolitan educational pursuit,” so they give more weight to building relationships with Chinese, rather than with Koreans. Their relationships with Koreans are arranged by exchanging language resources. Chinese students` practice of “making relationship through gift-giving” has as its goal that the receiving end should recognize their cultural identity through combining national “hau” and the individual`s hau. This kind of gift reduces a receiver`s obligation to pay it back, and makes it easier to build up the relationship as well as to provide the giver`s cultural image. Transmigrants maintain long-distance relationships through ICT(Internet based Communication Technology), which makes it possible to have multiple simultaneous relationships in the sending country and in the receiving country. Long-distance relationships with family members and friends are the main channel of emotional and financial support, an inevitable part of the migration trajectory. The strong family bond has the function of limiting possible marriage partners in an effort to keep immediate family relatives within the same nationality. This study reveals the transmigrants` strategic choices and arrangement of multiple relationships, and their accumulation of social capital in the context of transnational social space, which partially contradicts the notions of social capital put forth by Putnam and Coleman in their studies.
