[논문 초록]
본 연구의 목적은 고등교육 국제화와 관련하여 이루어진 그 간의 제반 논의를 분석해 봄으로써 관련 연구자들에게 이 분야의 주요 발전 동향과 이슈에 대한 기초적 지식을 체계적으로 제공하고, 이를 바탕으로 고등교육 국제화에 대한 보다 활발한 후속연구를 촉발시키는 계기를 제공하는데 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 먼저 고등교육 국제화의 개념과 연구범위를 검토하였고, 최근 10년간(2001-2010) 국내외에서 이루어진 학술지 논문과 정책연구보고서들을 중심으로 그 간의 연구 동향과 주요 선행연구들의 내용을 심층적으로 분석하였다. 분석결과 외국의 경우에는 고등교육 국제화에 관한 연구가 이미 상당수준으로 축적되어 있고 그 연구 영역도 매우 광범위하지만, 한국의 경우 아직까지 고등교육 국제화와 관련된 연구실적이 전반적으로 매우 빈약한 가운데 특히 학술지 논문 형태의 연구실적은 더욱 제한적이었다. 그리고 연구 수행패턴도 이미 발생한 현안에 대응하는 연구에 치중하고 있을 뿐 보다 폭넓고 장기적 시야를 가지고 고등교육 국제화가 초래할 다양한 함의와 이에 대한 선제적 대응전략을 마련하지 못하고 있었고, 아울러 국제화가 대학 현장에서 어떤 영향을 미치고 있는지를 미시적으로 분석하는 연구도 매우 부족했다는 점을 발견할 수 있었다. 이러한 분석결과를 바탕으로 본 연구는 (1) 산발적이고 비체계적으로 이루어지고 있는 연구 성과의 빈 곳을 채워줄 수 있는 보다 균형잡힌 연구, (2) 고등교육 국제화 진전에 따른 제반 이슈를 예측하고 이에 대한 쟁점과 대응방안을 선제적으로 제시할 수 있는 다양한 실천적 연구, (3) 보다 장기적으로 고등교육 국제화에 대한 연구를 활성화 할 수 있는 전문연구소, 학회 및 학술지 등 연구 인프라의 구축의 필요성을 결론으로 제시하였다.
The purpose of this study is to synthesize the results of previous studies conducted at home and abroad in this area, which the authors hope would function as a catalyst for facilitating more systematic research on this important issue in Korea. The study reveals that, compared to studies conducted abroad, there has been only a few research, in particular articles published in academic journals, on the internationalization of higher education in Korea. In addition, most research was conducted in a re-active fashion to deal with an imminent issues that has already taken place. Based on the results of analyses, this study identifies the following three as the most imminent issues, on which more extensive attention should be placed: (1) balanced research efforts to establish more systematic accumulation of knowledge on the internationalization of higher education; (2) a practical or policy-oriented research to pro-actively respond to future developments of internationalization of higher education; and (3) the need to establish a solid research infra-structure (e. g., research institute, academic society, journal specialized in the internationalization of higher education) to effectively facilitate scholarship on the internationalization of higher education.
