[논문 초록]

국내 대학의 유학생 수가 확대됨에 따라 학업을 수행하며 노동 시장에서 일하고 있는유학생의 수 역시 증가하고 있다. 이 연구는 유학생의 학업 중 노동에 초점을 맞춰 학업중 노동 가능성이 유학 선택에 미치는 영향을 밝히고, 학업과 노동을 병행하는 과정에서그 균형이 유지 혹은 붕괴되는 데 영향을 미치는 사회적 조건들을 밝히는데 목적을 둔다. 이를 위해 경상북도 경산시에 위치한 사립대학인 A에 재학 중이거나 졸업한 베트남과몽골 출신 유학생 17명에 대한 면담 조사를 실시하였다. 면담 조사 분석 결과, 지방 대학이 주는 상대적으로 풍부한 장학금 혜택과 낮은 생활비 등의 학력적, 경제적 조건이 한국어 한국 문화 습득을 통한 취업 성공이라는 학생들의 욕망과 결합하는 과정에서 시간제노동의 가능성이 한국 유학을 현실화시키는 조건으로 작동한다는 점을 밝힌다. 또한 한국대학에서 학업과 노동을 병행하는 방식을 분석하여 한국어 실력과 대학 근처 양질의서비스 직종으로의 접근 가능성 여부가 학업과 노동의 (불)균형 상태를 만들어낸다는것을 드러낸다. 마지막으로 유학생이 자신의 노동 경험을 이해하는 방식을 살펴 학업과노동의 불균형을 경험하는 경우라 할지라도 현재의 노동에 ‘배움’의 의미를 부여하며극복해 나가고자 한다는 점을 강조한다.

As the number of international students increases, the number of students joining the labor market during the semesters has risen correspondingly. This study aims to explore how the possible availability of part-time work influences international students’ decision-making in choosing which country and university to study in. In addition, by examining the part-time work experiences of international students after they join a university, this study investigates how they strike a balance between study and labor, whether it is maintained or it collapses. This study also analyzes how international students interpret their work experience in different ways. Through in-depth interviews with 17 Vietnamese and Mongolian students at a university located in Kyungsangbuk-do, South Korea, this study reveals that the possibility of part-time work plays a significant role as it actualizes and maximizes the benefits of studying abroad at Korean universities. Furthermore, highlighting the working experiences of the Vietnamese and Mongolian students reveals that students’ Korean language proficiency (i.e., TOPIK score) and their ability to access relatively decent part-time jobs near the campus are key to determining whether their work-study balance can be maintained. Lastly, this study reveals that even though international students face extreme hardships in their part-time jobs, they try to imbue the meaning of “learning” in their activities in order to overcome the difficulties they encounter.
