[논문 초록]
This study investigated how the experiences of Vietnamese students who studied at universities in Korea are utilized for their career development. By analyzing how the cultural capital they acquired through studying abroad improved their competitiveness in the process of domestic and foreign employment. It was intended to derive education and career development programs Korean universities may provide for international students, and further improvements for the study abroad system in Korea. As an empirical approach, this study collected data through in-depth interviews with 12 Vietnamese graduate students and post-graduate students from Korean universities. 5 out of 12 study participants were employed in Korea and other 7 were employed in Vietnam at the time of interview. Many of them were working as interpreters at both Korean overseas branches in Vietnam and companies in Korea. Some worked as assistants in the Departent for foreign students affairs at Korean universities, professors of Korean studies at Vietnamese universities, Vietnamese recruitment agencies for study abroad, and instructors at Korean language institutes. It can be seen that the Korean language skills developed through stud
ying abroad are being used as an important capital. Korean language skills are important tools, but cultural capital developed while studying abroad has been found to be useful for their employment or work life, such as understanding or speaking the same local dialects with one’s employers or learning culture quickly through part-time employment experiences. In addition, the ability to write and work on documents using computers is also as useful for their employment competitiveness and for securing an advantageous positions and employer's dedicated interpreter, that leads to high wages or a waiver from strenuous overtime. Based on these research findings, student career development programs and plans to improve the study abroad system in Korea were recommended to optimize the career path of Vietnamese students after graduation.
