[논문 초록]
본 연구는 중앙아시아 출신 유학생들이 한국 대학에 어떻게 적응하고 있는지 그 의미를 탐색하고 있다. 특히 유학 생활 초기의 의미에 집중하여, 이들이 유학 초기에 변화된 환경과 어떻게 상호작용하는지를 연구하였다. 2004년부터 시작된 외국인 유학생 급증 현상 속에서, 본 연구는 질적 연구의 프레임을 가지고 외국인 유학생이 놓이게 된 사회적인 맥락을 파악하는 것을 전제로 하는데, 이는 사회적 환경과의 상호 작용에 대한 분석이다. 이러한 현상학적인 접근에서 네 명의 중앙아시아 출신 유학생과의 심층인터뷰를 통해 초기 적응의 의미를 파악하고자 하였다. 연구는 2014년 5월부터 7월까지 2개월간 진행되었으며, 일대일 면접 방법을 원칙으로 하여 한 번에 평균 1시간씩 총 4회 진행되었다. 그 결과 중앙아시아 출신 외국인 유학생의 한국 대학 초기 적응의 의미는 다음과 같은 ‘한국 대학 교육 시스템에의 적응’, ‘긍정적인 대인관계 맺기’, ‘글로벌 전문가 되기’, ‘미래를 위한 도전’로 나타났다.
Currently Korea met the paradigm change which from exporting brain to draining brain. From 2004, the Korean government has implemented a policy to bring in a lot of foreign students which is called the Study Korea Project. In addition to this policy, universities have tried to attract foreign students by affirming globalized education. Also, K-pop culture has had a positive effect on the national images of Korea and Korean education. For these reasons, the population of foreign student has increased rapidly.
In this context, this study aims to find the meaning of early adaptation for foreign students from Central Asia countries. Research questions of this study are as follows: (1)what students from Central Asia experience at university in Korea, and (2)how students make meaning of experiences at university in Korea. To do this, we used a qualitative method with phenomenological approach. Research participants are 4 students who were from Uzbekistan. These participants were selected by considering a period of college life. This study limits the early adaptation as within 6 months which is one semester in university. From April 2014 to June 2014 in-depth interviews has conducted. These interviews were analyzed by four aspects of college adaptation(Baker & Siryk, 1984) and cognitive adaptation theory(Taylor, 1983). The results are categorized in four meanings of the early adaptation to Korean university: a process of challenging for future, a process of managing relationships, adjusting to Korean educational system, and becoming a global professional.
