Based on participant observation to the daily lives of Chinese students studying in Australia, this article examines the cultural attitudes of them.
The reform and opening up and economic growth make more and more Chinese to go to study abroad. About 30% of Australian foreign students are Chinese. In the mid-19th century, many Chinese workers have come to work in Australia. Gold mining has become particularly active in Australia, and many Chinese came to Australia to seek wealth. However, there were also many explicit discriminations against Chinese. The legalization of White Australia Policy from 1901 continued until 1970. This prevented the Chinese and many Asians from coming to Australia. The abolition of White Australia Policy in the 1970s and the establishment of multiculturalism as an Australia's national policy, more and more Chinese settled in Australia.
Especially recently, the capital of China, including real estate development, has flowed in and the number of international students has increased significantly. Some Australians even call this a ‘Chinese invasion’ and think they pose a threat to Australian society. Due to the rapid increase in the number of Chinese people and the influx of Chinese capital, they can live in Australia in much the same environment as China.
Sometimes they experience racial discrimination and some Australians despise Chinese. Taiwanese try to distinguish themselves from Chinese, while Taiwanese experience another discrimination of Chinese people. Chinese and Taiwanese students in Australia interact with various subjects. As a global mobility experience, studying abroad involves the capital flow, the relationship of different countries, dependence on families, and changes in the job and education market.
