The article is to investigate, based on a questionnaire survey and case study compared with the Mongolian students in Korea, the current situation and nationalism of Chinese students studying in Korea and to consider its significance in Korean-Chinese relations.
The survey has found that the current features of Chinese students studying in Korea are as follows: 1) high percentage of the middle class and parents’ supports, 2) practical purpose of studying, namely getting a job, 3) good impression in the Korean language, and 4) strong cohesion and nationalism. In addition, Chinese students have relatively well adopted themselves to new circumstances in Korea, and have shown relatively less negative sense on the Korean people in terms of cultural and racial perspective. In comparison, most of them have expressed their perspectives toward Korea in a very practical way -- to understand and realize Korea in order to use it. Though insignificant now, the potential rate of anti-Korean group has shown relatively high.
It is common that international students have been dissatisfied with their host countries in their daily lives. However, as the 2008 demonstration shown, it is Chinese nationalism that makes them to express their living and racial complaints to anti-Korean sentiments. Most of the Chinese students currently studying in Korea belong to either the Balinghou or jiulinghou generation in China, in that they were born during the 1980s or 1990s. Under the strong nationalism drive in China, they have grown up with the patriotic education. For them, nationalism is stronger than socialism. At the same time, with China’s last 20years’ rapid economic growth and currently high political posture as G2, they have much pride in their country. Furthermore they have shown the feature of older generation’s nationalism as ‘shanghaied’ resistance nationalism. It is very sensitive to territorial and sovereign issues.
Therefore, it is important to understand their nationalism and to establish rational civil and social norms between China and Korea. It is also essential to realize political and economic significance of the Chinese students studying in Korea and to support them so as to foster a future pro-Korean group in the two countries’ relations.
