The purpose of study was to explore the differences between the perceptions of professors and international students on multicultural competence using a phenomenological research method. Participants were 8 professors and 9 international students(3 undergraduate students and 6 graduate students). The findings revealed the interview participants’ perspectives on professors’ multicultural competence. First, according to the professors who participated in the interviews, personal multicultural competence of professors includes understanding the concept of multiculturalism, equal treatment toward students, linguistic ability, special consideration for international students, personal traits and characteristics, openness and acceptance, having interest in international students’ personal life, promoting interactions among students, problem solving and coping ability, and experience of living in other countries or studying abroad. Especially, the professors insisted that multicultural competence in terms of institutional dimension be established first in order for professors to better exert their personal multicultural competence. Institutional multicultural competence, for example, includes operation of prerequisite learning program for international students’ university life, providing regular multicultural education, research on the actual state and management of international students, program development for intentional interaction among students, and support for international university life. Second, professors’ multicultural competence that the international students perceive includes consideration for students’ language level, understanding students’ unique cultural background, cultural discrepancy in an academic aspect, personal characteristics, psycho-social support, and having interest in students’ career and employment in Korea. Implications, limitations and suggestions of this study, based on the findings, are provided in conclusion.
