[초록]

This study is intended to help Korean universities more successfully attract and retain international students by exploring the gap between cognitive, affective, and external expectations and experiences. Researchers conducted in-depth interviews with Korean studies students across a range of ethnicities and nationalities in 2021. The paper finds that the gap can be reduced in two ways. First, universities can manage the unrealistic expectations about life in Korea created through media portrayals through education and pre-enrollment exposure. Second, universities must increase their commitment to act in loco parentis for international students, who lack the tacit cultural knowledge and social networks to navigate difficulties alone.

본 연구의 목적은 한국에 관심을 가지는 외국인 유학생의 성공적인 한국 유학생활에 도움을 주기 위해 유학생이 가지는 인식적, 영향적, 외부적 기대와 현실의 격차를 연구하는 데 있다. 본 연구는 2021년 6개월간 다양한 국적과 인종을 지닌 9명의 외국인 학생을 대상으로 다차원적인 인터뷰를 시행했으며, 조사를 통하여 현실과 기대의 간극을 좁힐 수 있는 두 가지 방안을 제시한다. 우선, 대학은 외국인 유학생이 한국에 들어오기 전 미디어를 통해 형성된 비현실적인 기대를 관리해야 할 필요성이 있으며, 두 번째로 대학은 한국에서 사회적 네트워크가 부족한 학생들을 위해 부모와 같은 책임의 중요성을 인식하고 관리해야 한다.
