An increasing number of foreign students choose South Korea as their study destination for their tertiary education. However, despite being exposed to international students in their campuses, Korean students do not interact with them, which leads to missed opportunities. Furthermore, international students rely on other foreigners or students from their own countries within their university campuses to aid them in their academic problems.
In this study, the international student migration trends and reasons for student migration, as well as the situation of international students in South Korea are being used as a background. On a global scale, the number of international students has surpassed 5 million people since 2014. Among the countries with the highest number of inbound international students, the top positions are occupied by the United States, the United Kingdom, China, France, Germany, and Australia. The opportunity to acquire human capital and a higher income, residency visa, employment chances, tuition fees, the quality of study, scholarship, development of social skills are among the main factors influencing the decision to migrate for education purposes. While the Korean government plans on attracting 200,000 students by the year 2020, in 2016 the number of international students in South Korea reached 104,262 people. Over 80% of these students come from Asian countries, such as a China, Vietnam, Japan and Mongolia.
This study focuses on three major potential factors (foreign language ability, campus social setting, and student perception) affecting the interaction levels between international and home students in universities based in Seoul. Previous literature reveals the obstacles occurring in the academic life of the students due to the lack of communication, disinterest for cooperation and participation in the classroom, as well as in the formation of relations, and the perception of foreigners. This study also analyses the correlation between these obstacles and the region of origin of the international students or the university they are attending. Additionally, their previous experience abroad, as well as the intention of international students to remain in Korea after the completion of their studies have been surveyed.
To achieve this, the quantitative data from online surveys on 251 students – 202 international students, from 70 countries, and 149 Koreans students – has been analyzed. Additionally, students were asked to give subjective answers regarding their fear of approaching students from the other group. The majority of the answers focused on language barriers and inability to communicate, their perception of the other students, and the willingness of the other group to interact with them. The answers were similar on both study groups, although Korean students were more reserved in revealing their opinions.
The variables were categorized according to the three factors that could affect the interaction – foreign language ability, campus social setting, and student perception. The results reveal that, among the 3 factors mentioned above, foreign language ability cannot become an obstacle of the interaction between international and home students in Korea. A large portion of international students can speak Korean language at an intermediate to advanced level and have knowledge of Korean culture and society. The remaining factors, the campus social setting, and the student’s perception, can become an obstacle for the interaction between the two groups. Even though a large number of the international and home students agree to participate in group projects with members of the other group, the majority of home students admit to not having any foreign friends in their university campuses. Lack of exposure to foreigners does not allow a sense of familiarity between Korean students and them.
While no correlation between the participants’ nationality and their preference for making foreigner friends was found, international students form friendships with and rely more on other foreigners, instead of Korean students. While the majority of both international and home students agree on the necessity of studying Korean language and culture, both groups have different opinions on the necessity of forming relations with one another. There was no evidence of favoritism towards people from developed countries. There was a correlation between the regions of origin and their level of Korean skills, which reveals that students from North-East Asia are the most proficient in Korean language. Regarding the university of the participants, the survey reveals that there is no correlation between the foreign language ability of the students and where they chose to pursue their studies. However, in the case of both parties, associations between the university and their social relations with the opposing studied group have been found.
An analysis of the subjective answers of international and home students was made and the results show that a part of the respondents fears approaching the other due to insecurities concerning their foreign language skill, behavior they perceive as being intimidating and a hesitation to intrude and disturb the other person’s activity. While the results of this analysis provided similar answers, international students were more open to express their opinion, compared to Koreans.
The conclusion chapter analyzes the results of this study and offers suggestions for improving the quality of the interaction and for providing more opportunities for contact between students. While this study has achieved its aim of analyzing the factors affecting the interaction between international and home students, it has its limitations, such as the low number of participants and the analysis of a small number of universities located in the Seoul area. There is a need for future research.
