우울 수준을 측정하기 위해 Radloff(1977)가 개발했고, 전겸구와 이민규(1992)가 번안한 우울척도인 CES-D(Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale)를 사용하였다.

The number of foreign students has continued to rise in Korea since in 2004. According to the studies reviewed, foreign students experience more problems with language skills, interpersonal relationships, social support, cultural differences, and emotional aspects compared to other students studying in their own countries. Such problems cause foreign students to suffer mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. However, studies of foreign students in Korea have been limited mostly to Chinese students, and studies on foreign students from other countries are as yet insufficient.
Factors affecting students quality of life and happiness vary by country of origin, and the difficulties of acculturative stress can also vary depending on various cultures based in Asia. Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyze the effects of acculturative stress and social support on depression in the growing population of Vietnamese foreign students in Korea.
The study participants were current students at Korean universities or in graduate school in Korea and used an online survey questionnaire from April 24, 2017 to May 14, 2017, with 204 of the surveys collected analysed from that time on.
To measure the level of acculturative stress, the research tool used by Sandhu and Asrabadi (1994) and developed into a revised version for acculturative stress by Lee (1995) was used. To measure the level of depression, the research tool used by Radloff (1977) and developed into a revised version for depression by Jeon and Lee (1992) was utilized. To measure social support, Park's measure (2012) of social support viewed as a functional aspect, developed from Park's work (1985), was followed.
The following summarizes the main contents of this thesis and the results of the study.
First, based on CES-D, 43.1 percent of Vietnamese students in Korea were in the depressive group among all the students with mental health problems in the survey.
Second, the average level of acculturative stress experienced by Vietnamese students was 2.3, which is lower than normal for other international students.
Third, the average number of social support for Vietnamese students is 3.34, which is higher than normal, so the majority of Vietnamese students were receiving substantial social support.
Fourth, acculturative stress was proven to have a positive correlative effect on the depression of Vietnamese students. In other words, the higher the level of acculturative stress, the more severe the level of depression becomes.
Fifth, the overall level of acculturative stress of Vietnamese students was not high, but its effect was much larger than other factors. Thus, it is reasonable to suppose that acculturative stress can be an important factor in causing depression.
Sixth, social support was proven to have a negative correlative effect on the depression of Vietnamese students. Thus, the higher level of social support, the lower the level of depression.
Finally, the study showed that students who earned a minimum of 200,000 – 400,000 won per month on average had higher rates of depression than those who earned more than 800,000 won, and those with school grades of mostly B were at higher rates than those with A. From this, it can be noted that economic and educational support is important in order to help students with depression.
Based on the results of this study, the implications are as follows.
First, in order to prevent Vietnamese students from experiencing mental health problems such as depression, intervention must be stepped up in the early stages of living in Korea. Social support systems should be established so that interventions can be made at the clinical level for severe depressive groups. In addition, access to mental health centers should be provided so that these cases can be detected and treated early on.
Second, Vietnamese students need help understanding the culture and lifestyles of Koreans, and people around them should be involved in helping them understand the culture, values and lifestyles of their native country to bridge the gap.
Third, when providing social support to Vietnamese students, more attention needs to be given them, with specific support for each sub-factor.
This study's main perspective is viewed from the context of the rising mental health problems of Vietnamese students in Korea, which include a growing number of mental health problems, and indicates how cultural adaptation stress and social support affect depression.
