전 지구적 차원에서 21세기는 ‘이주의 시대’로 명명할 수 있을 만큼 ‘이동성(mobility)’이 증가하고 있는 추세에 있다. 국가 간 발생하는 이동은 전통적 이주 방식과는 차별화된 유연한 형태인 유학, 여행, 결혼, 은퇴 등 다양한 목적에 따라 이루어지고 있다. 이주는 물리적 이동뿐만 아니라 행위주체가 담지하고 있는 사회･문화적 이동을 포함하는 의미를 지니고 있기 때문에 특정 사회의 문화를 관찰하는데 있어 주요한 논쟁적 지위를 가진다.
이 연구는 최근 들어 한국 사회에서 이주 집단으로서 가시화되고 있는 외국인 유학생에 관심을 둔다. 외국인 유학생을 이주를 실천한 행위자로 바라보며, 사회적 존재로서 이들의 위치를 인정하면서 이주 배경과 경험에 주목하고자 한다. 이를 통해 유학생을 매개로 출신국과 이주국인 한국 사회와의 드러나지 않는 연결고리를 미시적 차원에서 포착하고자 하였다. 그리고 외국인 유학생들이 한국에서의 유학 경험을 어떤 방식으로 자원화해내고, 활용하는지에 주목하였다. 이러한 논의는 이주사회로 이행하는 과정에서 발생하는 현실적 쟁점에 대한 설명을 제공해 주는데 도움이 될 것이다.
‘Mobility’ is on the rise around the globe in the 21st century to the extent that it is called the ‘the agea of migration.’ Mobility between countries takes place in a flexible way, very different from the traditional type migration, for various purposes such as studying abroad, traveling, marriage, and retirement. Since migration includes not only physical relocation but also the relocation of society and culture included in actors, it is a major controversial issue to observe a particular society’s culture.
This study focuses on foreign students studying in Korea, who are becoming increasingly visible as a migrant group lately in Korean society. This study views foreign students as the actors who have practiced migration, and intends to note the background of migration and their experience while recognizing their position as social beings. By doing so, this study attempted to identify a link which has not been revealed between their origin country and their migration destination Korea at the microscopic level from foreign students. Furthermore, this study noted how they turned their experience of studying in Korea into resources and used such resources. This discussion would help to provide an explanation on the controversial issues in reality, which occur when the country transitions into a migrant country.
